Scientific Advisory Group

Objectives of the (A)ATSR SAG

(Revised Jan 2006)

The over-arching objective of the (A)ATSR Science Advisory Group (SAG) is, through the AATSR Principal Investigator, acting on behalf of DECC and its funding partners, to exercise appropriate and effective scientific leadership in the conduct of the (A)ATSR exploitation programme. A complementary objective is to act as a bridge or conduit between the providers and the users of (A)ATSR data.

Terms of Reference of the (A)ATSR SAG

The terms of Reference for the (A)ATSR SAG are:

  • To maintain contact with users and to represent their needs with respect to (A)ATSR data
  • To ascertain and record scientific priorities for (A)ATSR, considering the capabilities of the sensors and their data products, including the archived data, in relation to the key scientific questions concerning the natural environment; including those questions of particular interest to the funding partners
  • To identify possible future applications of (A)ATSR data to current practical problems in environmental monitoring, especially those of direct interest to DECC and other funding agencies
  • To provide advice on the scientific and technical issues which may need to be addressed in order to realise the new applications identified
  • To consider, and where appropriate to provide feedback on, proposals for future missions which may contribute to the future continuity of the (A)ATSR data record
  • To seek opportunities to promote and expand awareness of (A)ATSR data, and to bring about the successful implementation of the (A)ATSR exploitation programme
  • To make recommendations, where necessary, to the PI, to DECC, to its funding partners, including NERC, and to ESA, on all issues which affect scientific effectiveness and usefulness of the (A)ATSR data-set

Modus Operandi of the (A)ATSR SAG

The main activities of the (A)ATSR SAG will be:

  • To review and contribute to the development and maintenance of an effective (A)ATSR Science Exploitation Plan (SEP). This document sets out a list of applications and priorities for (A)ATSR exploitation and then identifies possible, planned and on-going scientific investigations, which support the (A)ATSR applications through the use of (A)ATSR data
  • To seek input and feedback from existing and potential users of AATSR data and where appropriate, ensure that responsive action is taken
  • To review and contribute to the development and maintenance of the (A)ATSR Scientific Requirements for future missions
  • To monitor the work of, and make recommendations, if necessary, to external groups and sub-groups which may be formed to address specific technical areas, which include:
    • Validation (led by the Validation Scientist)
    • Instrument performance, operation and health (led by the Project Scientist
    • Data product integrity and improvement (working through the QWG)
    • Data archives (no formal sub-group formed, led by the PI)
    • Future missions (no formal sub-group formed, led by the PI)
  • To be pro-active in the development and implementation of the (A)ATSR Science Exploitation Plan (SEP), both through their own research activities and through interactions with the wider communities.
  • The main instrument for developing and documenting the exploitation of (A)ATSR data will be the SEP, which is a living document, initially written by the AATSR PI team, but, in the future, it is intended that significant contributions from SAG members will be incorporated in it. In order to achieve this effectively, it is expected that the SAG should represent as many as possible of the important areas of science served by (A)ATSR data and SAG members should also be active users of (A)ATSR data and be familiar with its capabilities.
  • The SAG will be convened and chaired by the AATSR PI and the Validation Scientist will be responsible for minutes and other practical arrangements.
  • Membership of the SAG and of any sub-groups will be reviewed at regular intervals to ensure that the relevant scientific areas are appropriately represented.
  • The (A)ATSR SAG will normally meet twice per year and will organise periodic science meetings for the wider community.
